What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Coke. I quit drinking about five years ago.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

My family has a long history in golf.

My Great Grandfather, on my Mom’s side, moved to the United States and the only thing he had with him, other than his suitcase was a letter of recommendation from James Braid.  He designed a few golf courses and was the head golf club designer for MacGregor.  He taught my Grandmother how to play and my Grandmother taught my Mom.

My Grandfather was the Men’s Club President at the local private golf course in my area, Western Hills, and he taught my Dad who has written for numerous golf magazines over the years.

My Dad bought me my first set of clubs at 11 years old and I slowly got more and more chances to play.  Eventually, I started working at Western Hills as a cart attendant and then got a job at the local public course Los Serranos Country Club.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I worked at Los Serranos for 7 years, working my way up to the Assistant Golf Professional while going to school to become a High School History teacher.  I left golf to pursue my teaching career which lasted 4 years.

I loved teaching High School History, but realized it wasn’t the career for me so I left teaching figuring I’d fall into something else.  Unfortunately, I made this decision as the recession hit and no one was hiring for jobs anywhere.  I fell back to one-on-one tutoring and my one student soon turned into a business where I learned how to market my business using the internet.

My tutoring business took off and I had numerous business owners of the kids I was tutoring reach out to me to ask me if I could do some of the same work for them and my internet marketing business was born.  I reached out to the course I worked at for 7 years, Los Serranos Country Club to see if they’d be interested in bringing me on board and I landed my first golf course client.

We were so successful at Los Serranos Country Club that I eventually wrote a book, The Social Golf Course which spoke to the importance of social media for golf courses.  I currently handle the social media and digital marketing for about ten golf courses and am looking to help grow the golf industry by managing the social presence of golf courses across the United States.

One of the biggest struggles I’ve had trying to grow 19th Hole Media was demonstrating the return on investment social media brings to golf courses, but recently I’ve created a way to do just that.  I’m looking forward to showing golf courses the potential for growth using social media in 2016.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

My favorite #GolfChat topics are the ones that #GolfChatters have a very strong opinion on.  I also love to see #GolfChat topics that create solutions for growing the game.

In my book, we have a chapter on St. Andrews and how the growth of anything really comes down to people.  The citizens of St. Andrews took it upon themselves to “grow golf” (@connectgolf says this terminology is cliche) and I look at #GolfChatters as a fresher version of the St. Andrews of old.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies.”
– Bobby Jones

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

It’s not so much a golf destination, but who I’m playing golf with.  Every Summer, my Dad, brother and I have a Father-Son Golf Trip to a golf course between 2 and 8 hours away.  It’s a weekend full of golf, billiards, cards, jacuzzis, competition, fun, and quality father-son time.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

Golf has so much potential.  The industries that are thriving today are the ones who fill peoples social news feeds with content they’re looking for.  The more a person sees their family and friends enjoying something, the more inclined they will be to take part in those activities.

Every golf course is ingrained in a community and these golf courses all have the opportunity to think more socially and get more community involvement from their local community.

Unfortunately, many local golf courses are dropping the ball.  It’s rare to see a golf course with an active social media presence and it’s even rarer to see one with an effective social media presence.

The potential is there for a revitalization of golf and it’s at our fingertips.  I only hope more golf courses begin to think more socially to get more golfers to the golf course.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Since starting #GolfChat we’ve had 385 people chime in at one time or another.  Asking me to choose my favorite #GolfChatters is like asking a mother to choose her favorite child.  But, I’d make a terrible mother so my favorite golfer is . . . you . . . Shh. Don’t tell everyone else.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

My cousin, Ryan Welborn played in the 1999 U.S. Open so I’m going to have to go with him because he’s my favorite.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Miller Lite, Coors Light or a Rum and Coke

How Did You Get Into Golf?

My dad. He caddied at a really nice club as a kid and teenager just out of Pittsburgh. When I was 9 he really got into golf and we took lessons together at a local driving range. Next thing I know we are joining a country club and from there golf became a huge part of my life. I played junior golf in Southern Cali and Palm Springs from ages 9-17. My son is almost 13 and he and I play every weekend.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

Playing and watching as much as I can. Passing on the great game and sportsmanship to my son.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

So far for me the variety overall makes #golfchat a fun hour. I like topics on instruction, equipment and also current events. I like to laugh and yes surprise, can be sarcastic but all in fun- I am pretty open and like that the format lends to comedy and true opinion.

Favorite Golf Quote?

Caddyshack is my favorite movie of all time so pretty much the whole movie is quoteable and I feel timeless. “Don’t sell yourself short judge, your a tremendous slouch”. One of many…

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

My dad took me to Scotland for my 30 birthday- pretty much the coolest dad ever! We had a great time, played St Andrews, Turnberry, Western Gailes and many more. Carnoustie was by far the toughest and we played in August 1999 a month after Jean Van De Velde got famous for all the wrong reasons! The Greenbrier lives up,to the hype big time. Love Spyglass and Pebble Beach as well. My dad and I want to play Pasatiempo next on our play bucket list.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I think it is as good as his has been in a long time. Rory, Speith, Day, Bubba, the list goes on of players in their prime that could and are ripping off multiple majors.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

The more the merrier- new blood, veterans of #golfchat all make the experience fun and a great time every week.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

Tom Watson is my golfing hero. Jim Furyk and Zach Johnson as well love seeing guys who are not power players still win.

19th Hole Media’s Top 10 List of 2015

At the end of the year, the 19th Hole Media team gets together to reflect on our successes and failures throughout the year. This meeting gives us an opportunity to fine-tune our direction and set new goals for the upcoming year.  These are the Top 10 things we accomplished in 2015.

Top 10 of 2015

10. Share Your Passion Scholarships

scholarshipsSince starting the Share Your Passion Scholarships in 2012, we’ve awarded scholarships to 17 deserving students. We have kept in contact with many scholarship winners and are still inspired by them. They continue to work towards following their passions and helping better the lives of others. This year we awarded 3 Share Your Passion Scholarships and gave out our first Student of the Year Scholarship Award to one of the hardest working students at The Tutoring Solution.

9. TV Appearance

11080661_10206382881436017_7712058961091484299_oZeb appeared on the Golf Life Video Channel for Fox Sports WEST. It was pretty darn cool to get on television.

8. Joined the Rotary Club

10984121_10154042856538840_6714998264776580589_nZeb was inducted into the Chino Rotary Club by Melinda Robbins, Dale Bright, and Steven Bremer. The Chino Rotary Club has been serving the Chino Valley since 1925. San Bernardino County Supervisor Curt Hagman spoke and my wife, Cindy, mom, Annie, and dad, Larry were all in attendance.

7. Speaking Engagements

zeb-speakingzeb-at-NGCOAOne of the things we enjoy most is educating others on growing their business. This year Zeb spoke with the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board, the Inland Empire Small Business Development Center, the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce, Baldy View ROP, Small Business Summit, the California Golf Course Owners Association and the Golf Inc. Summit.

Topics for Zeb’s Speaking Engagements were:

  • Internet Marketing Strategies
  • Marketing with Facebook
  • How to Turn Your Business Into a Social Business
  • Marketing with LinkedIn
  • Marketing with Twitter
  • Social Media for Golf Courses
  • Innovative Marketing Tactics for Public Courses

6. #GolfChat

At the beginning of this year Zeb started #GolfChat. #GolfChat is a Twitter chat which happens every Tuesday at 5PM PST where some of the greatest minds in the golf industry come together to talk golf. #GolfChat has grown drastically since the beginning of the year and is a trending topic on Twitter every Tuesday. We’ve met so many amazing and passionate people working to grow golf.  A highlight of #GolfChat in 2015 was when professional golfer, Natalie Gulbis surprised #GolfChatters by giving away free tickets to the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay Golf Course.

5. Awards and Accolades

Screen Shot 2015-12-29 at 11.10.01 AMIt’s always nice to be recognized for the hard work you do. This year we were extremely grateful to receive a few unexpected awards:

4. Southern California Charity Golf Classic

11207321_10101061535855630_6436920246785791462_nWe hosted the 1st Annual Southern California Charity Golf Classic to raise money for several worthy charities on July 17 at Los Serranos Country Club.

With help from many in our community, the tournament helped raise $7,597.81 for charity.

We distributed the money to several charities including: Bark for Life, Boys Republic, California Scholastic Press Association, Chino Rotary, Corona Firefighters Benevolent Fund, House of Ruth, The Let It Be Foundation, Salvation Army, Share Your Passion Scholarship, and the Wounded Warrior Project.

We had such a great time with this, we’re planning on running it again in 2016!

3. Chairman of the Board at the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce

11755429_1665688123649805_2385826912900505227_nOn July 27, Zeb was installed as Chairman of the Board for the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Becoming the Chairman of the Board has given Zeb an opportunity to help make local business owners more successful.

During his term of office, he set five goals to work towards in 2015/2016:

  • connect and work with other local business-related organizations
  • collaborate more with organizations that work to educate business owners
  • encourage and promote the involvement of young business owners in our community
  • enhance our use of technology
  • focus more on giving back

2. Lacey Gets Married

In June, Lacey’s twin brother, Rocky married Megan Hutchinson at a beautiful wedding in Corona, CA.

Truly a notable year for the Welborn Family and there was another addition to family this year…

#1. Birth of Sebastian Welborn-De La Torre

monsterbashSebastian Welborn-De La Torre was born on Friday, November 13th at 9:52pm in Ontario at 8 pounds, 9 ounces.

Sebastian is a happy, healthy, and super cute baby.

2015 #GolfChat Survey and Awards | @DaveHeald

#GolfChat Survey

Thank you to everyone who participated in #GolfChat this year.  When I started #GolfChat in January, 2015, I had no idea what to expect.  I’ve had a blast running and participating in #GolfChat.

Since #GolfChat questions come from you, I thought it only right to make the direction of #GolfChat up to you too.

I’d love to see #GolfChat expand in 2016 to make an even larger impact in the golf industry and want your ideas on how we can make that happen.  I’d also like to recognize your favorite #GolfChatters with our first ever #GolfChat Awards . . . which I thought would be a fun way to recognize those of you who participate in #GolfChat.

Lastly, I also thought my website might be a good place to build commentary surrounding growing golf and wondered if some of you might want to be contributors to the 19th Hole Media website.

I’ll be looking for contributors in two different areas:

  1. Growing Golf – If you have ideas on how to grow golf we’d love to include you as one of the contributors to the 19th Hole Media website. We are working on a style guide for our contributors page.  We want to make sure the articles related to growing golf are relevant, accurate, well-written and appropriate for our audience. Each article will display the author and a short bio. Please answer yes to our become a 19th Hole Media contributor in our survey and leave your email address if you’re interested.
  2. 19th Hole Media Stories – A 19th Hole Story is a story you like to tell at the 19th hole.  If you have a 19th Hole Story you’d like to share, please answer yes to the question on wanting to share your 19th Hole Story.

Take the survey by clicking on the button below – https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1MPJiLrMePyTA-bfh2VmKws6b1aQLrWnXUEbmaGXi3Lk/viewform

Bridgestone Golf

As you all know, the Bridgestone Golf Team has been participating in #GolfChat for the past few months.  I sent them a few copies of my book, The Social Golf Course and in return they asked me to take their golf ball fitting (http://www.bridgestonegolf.com/product/ball-fitting).

After finishing the Bridgestone Golf Ball fitting, they sent me this nice care package in time for the Holidays including my fitted golf ball and a couple of Bridgestone Golf Hats (gave one to my Dad, who told me he only plays Bridgestone by the way).

Thank you to the Bridgestone Golf Team. We’re looking for more opportunities to work together in 2016 for our fellow #GolfChatters.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

I enjoy a cold beer in golf season and a Crown Royal on ice in the off season.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

My Dad used to take me fishing every Sunday morning. The only thing I ever caught was a cold so one day on the way home I asked if we could go golfing instead. I have never picked up a fishing rod since.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I am a Certified Professional Golf Instructor through C.G.T.F. and work at East Park Golf Gardens in London, Ontario as their Pro and Clubhouse Manager. For the last 3 years I have also written a weekly column during golf season for a local newspaper, The Londoner” called “Let’s Talk Golf”. Mostly tips and instruction with the odd opinion piece.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Speeding up the Pace of Play. I believe it should be taught to all as a important part of Etiquette. I believe that most people who play too slow are not fully aware of the impact they are having on those who play behind them.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“Swing your Swing” (Arnold Palmer)

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

In Canada there can be no finer golf experience that the Banff Springs in Alberta. Last spring I also had the pleasure of playing Kauai Lagoons. Very different golf experiences but both breath taking and worth a trip.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I know that the catch phrase these days is “Grow the Game” but I can’t help but wonder of we don’t need to pull back a little and consolidate our strong base. Golf grew at unsustainable rates for about 20 years and now we seem desperate to try and maintain that momentum. Golf is a great game and will always be here. I have to admit that I am not a fan of the non traditional offerings we are seeing like Fling Golf and Foot Golf. They look like fun activities but please don’t be fooled into thinking they are golf. In my opinion, they are simply ways for desperate owners to fill tee times.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

I enjoy reading and participating with all who come on Tuesday evenings for #golfchat.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

I do like a lot about some of the new breed in today’s game like Rory, Jordan and Jason but there is only one and never will there be another Jack Nicklaus.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I write a blog to share my thoughts. www.shutfacegolf.com. It’s a big vulgar at times. I don’t hold back. Also why I don’t make my name known.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

Most of the time it is coffee. However, on the odd time it will be a glass of Merlot.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

At 14 years of age, I was introduced to golf by my Dad. That was about 40 years ago. He taught me the rules of etiquette before the actual rules of golf.

Best golf lessons I ever received. I am forever grateful for his patience.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

Freely sharing my thoughts, tips and stories about golf. I try to share the positive aspects of golf and hopefully brighten someone’s day from time to time.

I believe that everyday we should improve the 3 foot space around us and I chose to make a difference through being grateful for golf!

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Anything golf! I do not like negative ranting and generally choose to ignore the diatribes.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“Of all the hazards, fear is the worst.” Sam Snead

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

Actually, I do not have a favorite location. I am more interested in who I golf with as oppose to where.

I have found that an average course becomes awesome if the playing in the right foursome.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

The golf industry ebbs and flows. At this time, golf appears to be on the down slide, but with the new crop of your professional superstars, this trend might be about change.

As long as #golfchat continues to grow, so does the golf industry!

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

It really changes from week to week. I have several side bars depending on the topic. Seems that no matter the questions on #golfchat, I find positive topics to share with the #golfchatters!

Favorite Golfers and Why?

Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, and golfer on the tee box of a par three. Hate to miss the hole-in-one.

Real Name: Tiffany Chaisson
Location: I am Australian but my home is PEI Canada but only six months of the year. The rest of the time I am golfing and eating my way around the world.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

My 20-30 ingredient smoothie.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

In August 2013, I played my first round at Belfast Highland Greens, in PEI Canada. I shot 118 on this nine hole course, had no idea how to hold a club but could connect nearly every time.

In June 2014 I shot an even 100 at Eagles View (9 hole track), bought a set of clubs at a yard sale and started hitting hundreds of balls at the range of the golf resort where I worked. I was shown how to hold a club by a member, (I am a fingers interlocked girl) and I returned to Eagles View the following week and shot a 64.

36 strokes knowing just how to hold a club – I was in. I love it, am totally addicted and since then have golfed a lot.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I want everyone to love golf as much as I do. I am golfing and eating my way around the world, have started a website, a YouTube channel and since July 2014 I have golfed at 44 courses in 4 countries only 34,000+ to go.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

I was very happy to discover #golfchat and a bunch of fellow enthusiasts but I am very new to golf and while I am learning things constantly, am too new to get fired up about particular golf topics.

Favorite Golf Quote?

I completely agree with Ben Hogan – “The only thing a golfer needs is more daylight”. I am of the belief that everyday is a good day for golf, some days are just better.

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

I love everywhere I have golfed and will be returning to all countries I have already golfed in, but PEI, Canada is one of my favourite places to golf in the world.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

While new to golf, I think golf needs to reinvent itself around the world. Most of the places I have visited are losing members with the emergence of more social golfers who like to play different courses rather than the same one each week. I have spoken with a lot of courses and I think that changing competition structures and adjusting course access to attract all ages of golfers would help. Not all of us can give four hours on a saturday to play a comp but still want to play competitive golf and could work golf into their schedule if some different formats were offered.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Zeb, Jeremy, Mike, CenCalHack, Amy, Cassie, Ryan are always good for a golf chat.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

Last year, just after I started playing, I had the pleasure of watching Jordan Spieth putt out and win the Australian Open so he is a bit of a favourite. I also really like Mickelson. I love his adaptability and like to think I play like him – getting myself out of the crap I’ve just put myself in.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

I have two drink preferences – beer or red wine. My two favourite beers are TripleBogey (and yes, that is a beer marketed for golfers in my part of Canada) and Creemore Springs. But truth be told, anything lighter than a stout is just fine with me.

Red wine – An Aussie Shiraz or pretty much anything from Tuscany are favourites.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

My dad got me started when I was 10. He bought me a seven club set and a red, nylon golf bag and one dozen Canada Cup golf balls. I was hooked. I used to practice chipping in my room all winter (maybe I need to get back to that routine?). I learned to play on a par 3 course where I grew up outside on Hamilton, in Ontario.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

I started a golf blog in 2014 focusing on public play in Canada. Why? Part self-indulgence, but part of it is to engage with other golfers and also to help inform people about the exceptional public golf options which are available throughout Canada. I am enjoying writing more than I expected and it’s been great to meet golfers from across Canada and around the world who share a genuine passion for the game.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Topics like growing the game, engaging juniors and women in golf, slow play as well as engaging in a more realistic and public player friendly set of rules are topics I like.

I see the LPGA as the tour with the greatest potential to transform golf around the world.

And possibly the best thing to happen to the game in some time is the Drive, Chip and Putt contest which happens before The Masters. Awesome.

Favorite Golf Quote?

Great question. I don’t know if I have a favourite quote. Being a poor putter, ‘never up, never in’ or ‘100% of putts left short don’t go in’ would have to be two of my most used, if not favourites.

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

My two favourite places to play golf are Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island, both in eastern Canada. If I could only play one course for the rest of my life it would be Highlands Links on Cape Breton Island. Get me outside of Canada and I love the desert golf experience in Scottsdale, AZ. I’d pack tonight and move tomorrow to live and golf in any of those three places.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

I’m a glass half-full guy. I think golf is in a good place. Participation, along with courses, will always ebb and flow. And I believe in the resiliency of the game to address challenges along the way.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

@ZebWelborn needs to be recognized for his leadership and engagement in #GolfChat. His ability to make me feel like he and I are having a one on one conversation admist the hustle and bustle of #GolfChat is admirable and appreciated.

There are many others I love chatting with, from all around the world, but to my fellow Canadians who participate it is nice that we’re able to engage and share and show what makes Canadians some of most passionate and dedicated golfers in the world. Our forced 5 month shutdown only stokes our passion for the game.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

The one golfer I admire most is Arnold Palmer. He’s a man of genuine character. His respect for people and the game seems unmatched to me. His values are so aligned to what I love about golf. Plus, he’s cool as hell.

In today’s game, I cheer for the Canadian professionals every time I see them on a leaderboard. I admire Ian Poulter’s flash and his honesty. I have yet to read his book but feel his story is a fascinating one. His stock may never be as high as it was for that Ryder Cup in Medinah.

What Do You Order from the #GolfChat Bar?

A favorite from my bartending days – Angry Balls. Served in a pint glass over ice; one shot Fireball + Angry Orchard Hard Cider. Top off with cherries.

How Did You Get Into Golf?

I had ZERO interaction with the sport prior to the age of 22. My father has never seen a flagstick as far as I know, and no friends were ever into it. That changed when I met my roommate – a HUGE golf fan. He watches, plays, putts around the house – it’s an obsession. He had a tournament on TV one day and I absent-mindedly zoned into it. I realized after an hour that I’d been watching intently and was rooting for certain players. After that, I bought a boxed set of clubs to try my hand at the game and now I’m constantly glued to Golf Channel.

What Are You Doing in Golf and Why?

First and foremost, blogging about it. I watch religiously, read every story about it and discuss it with anyone who can stand to hear about my dislike of Dustin Johnson. But I’m also a passionate beginner working my way through the stages of learning the sport.

Favorite #GolfChat Topics?

Topics that are off-the-wall and off-the-course. I’m not just into golf because of the tee times. I want to talk about the players, the industry and everything else that happens within the sport. I’m happy to talk about my experiences, but I’m not nearly as passionate about last weekend’s bogey as I am about Rickie Fowler’s social media sass.

Favorite Golf Quote?

“They call it golf because all the other four letter words were taken.” – Raymond Floyd

Favorite Golf Destination and Why?

I haven’t golfed it (yet) but I absolutely adored being at TPC Sawgrass for this year’s Players Championship. The course was gorgeous and I had legitimately meaningful interactions with the players that I blog about.

Also, I got lost on the back nine on Saturday, but that resulted in me meeting Fluff, Jim Furyk’s caddie. We’ll call that a win.

How Do You View the State of the Game of Golf?

This is a loaded question. I like most of what I see, otherwise I wouldn’t be into it. However, I hear complaints that the sport is dying or that not enough young people and women are into it, but then (as a young woman) I’m patronized and degraded when I step onto the course.

It’s bad enough that the sport is tough – so beginners are more likely to give up – but you pile on the rude comments and golfers who are impatient with newbies and you create zero incentive for me to want to be a part of this world. Luckily, I’m thick-skinned, but I can see why women and young people would choose other avenues.

Who Are Your Favorite #GolfChatters and Why?

Obviously @ZebWelborn (it’s like the obligatory thanking of the Academy, but he really is awesome), and I’ve had great back-and-forths with @MarkKagaoan, @3JackAlmanac, @cencalhack and @todd_fitness.

Favorite Golfers and Why?

I’ve named every club in my bag (and my glove) after favorites, but the abbreviated list in no particular order is:
Rickie Fowler
Jordan Spieth
Fred Couples
Jason Dufner
Jim Furyk (but mostly because I love his wife, Tabitha and his caddie, Fluff)
